“It’s like hell for us now”

E-mail Print PDF

These are the words Joshua used when I spoke to him today. The conditions in the prison have decreased over the last month. The prison is overfilled but more prisoners are still coming in. Ten more prisoners came today, Joshua told me. They are beaten, tortured, made fun of etc by other prisoners.

They are crying, screaming and fighting all the time. Today there was a fistfight that went on for hours in the cell next to the boys. Joshua describes the situation as hellish. A bad gang has made the conditions especially bad, and the boys’ lives have been threatened again. In addition the electricity has been gone, and there is a lack of water. The person we pay to purchase food and water to the boys is faithful, so they have water to drink, but there is a lack of water for everything else. All this leads to more disturbances among the other prisoners.

All of this violence and the other problems are a huge mental strain on the boys, not to mention everyone else in the prison.
