Norwegian Press by Knut Moland November 24th 2009

Joshua criticizes the Norwegian press today, especially Dagbladet and VG. Myself I want to say that for the most part many of the press has conducted themselves well, and written and spoken mainly and to the point. The local media has been great, and NRK and TV2 has also been great.

Media - Now translated into English

    E-mail Print PDF

In this segment we want to clear some things up about what has been written in the media in the last six months. It can only be a small portion because the amount of information is enormous.

We have during this Congo-case experienced that the media coverage has had it’s shortcomings in different ways. The truth level has in some cases been way out there. A lot of the stories have more or less levels of truth and informational value. It is hard to know what to believe or what not to believe. The angle the media sometimes has chosen is misleading and appears to be more about sensation and a desire to sell newspapers. The media has not been interested in source criticism. Maybe they should’ve sent criminal reporters instead of news reporters, in order to maintain better source criticism.

    Below we have some examples:

    1. The witnesses

See in the headline “articles” how the so called “witnesses” have explained themselves to different medias and in the courtroom: (Passasjerene som ble Vitner og dernest gjort til Informanter som igjen slapp å avlegge ed i retten)

    2. The training video

VG had a large article in the paper Monday September 14th about a trainingvideo that the Norwegian ambassador in Uganda received from John Hunwick. John Hunwick is the owner of the guesthouse Tjostolv and Joshua lived in Kampala. John Hunwick also owns Bussi Island where the training took place. He owns many other properties as well and we encourage the media to look further into his background. He also works for the Ugandan Intelligence. He has known about the training video and knew that the training was authorized by the Ugandan authorities. In the training video we see three men, two black and one white.

All three voluntarily took part in the training, and knew what it would involve. (according to Joshua he has participated in much harder training in England than what we see here.) One of the three, Samuel Ociti, was interviewed by VG. The other two didn’t want to.  In VG we read among other things about a dog that French (Joshua) refers to in the video. VG writes: In an incident…. that VG have confirmed by a witness who was on the island, the young American was told to kill an old sick dog. He failed to kill the dog with the one shot he had, and French had to finish the job. Later they all got punished, and they had to hold the heavy iron bar over their heads.

When lawyer Furuholmen was on his way to Kisangani the first time, he was in Kampala and interviewed the three who was part of the training. The interviews were taped. There were two men from Uganda and one American. When Furuholmen came back to Norway he held a press conference on September 26th. Aftenposten got the exclusive listen to the tapes, but didn’t do much with the story. As far as I know it was just a little mention on the papers website.

We have their names and pictures of the three. Under “articles” you will find a transcript of the interviews: Interview with the 3 menn from the "training video" (In English) . Some words on the tapes are difficult to hear. We marked that with dots. In this interview Tom and Sam are not their actual names. Sam is the American.

Another part of the story is that the lawyer associate Jon Sverdrup Efjestad from Furuholmens Lawyer Company and I watched the training video in VG’s office, and we never saw a dog on this tape.  After seeing the video I asked VG what they were going to do with it. If they where going to place it on internet? They responded that they hadn’t decided yet. Only a few minutes after we left the video was on the net!

Read the interviews under the headline “articles” - Intervju med guttene fra "treningsvideoen" (engelsk/English).

    3. Dagbladet and misquotes:

Joshua was very upset by Dagbladets covering of the trial. Read more under the headline “Joshua and Tjostolv - Joshua 12th November: All lies (English version)

    4. Passport cheat

On October 5th we read the following in VG’s newspaper:

Quote: “VG has also got access to a police document that shows that Joshua French has reported a passport stolen in Tanzania on february 3rd 2008. The stolen passport was issued in Oslo and has another passport number than the passport that was issued in Vestfold (Norway) police department in 2007.”

Then, a brief interview with the head of legal department in the Police Department who explained that usually one can not have two passports but that there are exceptions. Maybe VG should have thought that when a person has double citizenship, the answer is quite simple.

Maybe it is not wise to listen to the Ugandan police as the only source before writing about passport cheating. They are not always the best sourcees. And again, it depends how much you pay in bribe.

The truth is: Joshua has both Norwegian and British citizenship. When Joshua was 18 I personally went to the consulate at the British Embassy in Oslo and got forms for him to fill out. He got his British passport issued at the British consulate in Oslo.

This passport was valid for ten years, and it was this passport that was reported stolen in Tanzania.

    Joshua: Incorrect citations

    E-mail Print PDF

I spoke with my brother Joshua today. Dagbladets reporters Claude Nzunzu (in Congo) and Anders Holth Johansen has upset Joshua very much. I was able to tell him about all the wrong printings from the trial in the newspaper, and he wanted to clear some things up for you. (written in italic is Dagbladets online edition. The rest is quote of what my brother told me.

    Pure lies:

Joshua: I’m chocked at Dagbladet. I don’t recognize many of the quotes written in Dagbladet from the trial today.

14.55 French confirms that he hit one of the witnesses, Kasimu Aradjabu after the shots were fired.

Joshua: I never said that I hit Aradjabu. On the other hand I proved in court today that he’s lying. He says that we fought for 3 minutes, all the while Tjostolv apparently used an automatic weapon no more than 10 meters away (33 feet). I supposedly carried a revolver. How Aradjabu survived 3 minutes fighting with me, when both me and Tjostolv supposedly were heavily armed I don’t know. The answer is that he lied. Every Norwegian in the room can verify that this is complete lies from Dagbladet, and I don’t know why it wasn’t reported correctly. This is just one example of incorrect citations.

Joshua: This is as bad as when VG wrote about the unknown witness (the machete man) in their article. Apparently I said that the events around the murder lasted for 10 minutes. According to VG this weakened my statement. The problem is just that I never said this. It’s the two informant’s story. VG mixed my statement with the statements made by the informants.

14.00: The prosecutors ask French to tell them about his background, and what he knows about the Tutsi-minority in Congo.

    - I know just a little about this conflict. My father is british, and my mother is norwegian. My name is from the bible, and I have many friends in Israel. My sister studies in Israel says French.

Joshua: When asked about the Tutsi- minority in Congo I told a longer story about the conflict in Congo.

A totally different question was my relationship to the countries Norway, England and Israel. My answer was that I’m half British and half Norwegian and some details regarding that. My relationship to Israel is that I was a tourist there once. My mother has several friends there and my sister studied there for a year. That is my only connection to Israel.

13.20: The prosecutors ask French about his employment:

    - I was never formally part of Molands company says French.

-Why did Moland provide you with an ID-card with an alias, asks the prosecutor.

-Moland and I worked together in a security company, against pirates in Somalia. I was a friend of Moland so I ran the company when Moland wanted me to said French.

-We didn’t work in the same team in Somalia. There were a lot of people and a lot of ships. We just happened to come from the same country. We were recruited because we are former soldiers says French.

Joshua: I made it very clear that it was a business card, not an ID-card. I also said that I’m not a registered member of Tjostolvs Security Company, but I have an unofficial title so that I can represent his company when he is unavailable, especially in Europe, but also in Africa. They asked me if Tjostolv and I have travelled together in the Middle East. I answered that we did different things in Gulf of Aden, but in Africa we travelled together.

12.20: You have been accused of being spies and mercenaries. What do you have to say to that, the prosecutors wants to know.

-We are not mercenaries, even though Moland said that yesterday. You should know that he is sick, like the doctors have confirmed, says French.

-None of the doctors have said that he is sick, argue the courts chairman.

(Moland said in court yesterday that he was in Congo as a mercenary, red. com.)

-I came to Congo to find out the possibilities to do business here, says French.

Joshua: When asked what we were doing in Congo I answered that we mainly travelled as tourists, but also in regards to future possibilities for Tjostolvs Company.

12.00: Tjostolv Moland said during court yesterday that he was in Congo to support the Tutsi-minority in the country. Joshua French are being confronted with the same questions:

-Do you know the lawyer named Firmin Yangambi, the prosecutors’ asks.

-No, I’ve never met him or heard of him, says French.

Joshua: About Tjostolvs statements around the Tutsis I answered that the conflict in East-Congo and the different parties are not my conflict. There is a certain rebel leader arrested in Rwanda. They say he’s a war criminal. If that is the case I support his arrest.

11.15: We were attacked 109 kilometres outside of Kisangani. We wanted to drive to Nyanya so that we could communicate to the embassy what had happened to us, says French.

Joshua: I said that I wanted to go to Mambasa, not NiaNia. I explained this very clearly, three times. There was no way that this could be misunderstood.

Joshua: The media coverage of this trial is so occasional and poor that it destroys more than it enlightens. I hope the medias coverage hasn’t been this bad home in Norway the whole time.
