New riots in Kisangani prison

E-mail Print PDF

This morning negotiations were done between the prisoners and the authorities. A delegation consisting of the military, the head chief for all the prisons in the Orientale Province etc was allowed to enter the prison for further negotiations. The negotiation broke down and the delegation was pressed/driven out of the prison.

The prisoners stole a handbag and jewelry from a female lawyer in the prosess. Then the police stormed the prison but did not succeed - they were almost taken prisoners themselves. The prisoners use stones and have made weapons from whatever they can put their hands on. The prisoners have full controll over the prison inside the walls. One prisoner was wounded in the region of the mouth. Josh and Tjostolv have treated him. About 12.30 local time (Congo) the battle was over. At the moment it is quiet, but troops (could be the presidential guards) or some other military unit are surrounding the prison. A lot of people have congregated outside as well to watch the drama. Josh said that as far as he understands they all support the prisoners. The demand from the prisoners is full freedom, included for the two Norwegians, though they are not a part of the conflict.
