Calm - but for how long?

E-mail Print PDF

This afternoon most prisoners were locked into their cells exept for about 50 prisoners, many of them military prisoners. This happened after the second storming of the prison by the police and the military. Josh said that if the Red Cross and Doctors without borders had not come into the prison with the police and military then things could have gone very bad.

Later in the afternoon three policemen fully equipped with weapons etc again entered the prison and brought out about 10 prisoners from the different cells for interrogation. Police/military are surrounding the prison, but inside the prisoners have the control. About five injured prisoners were evacuated to hospital to day. One of them was the guy who was badly mangled in his face and who received first aid from the two Norwegians. One of the injured seemed ”fully out”. We do not know if he has survived or not. The Congolese man we have hired to do the shopping etc for Josh and Tjostolv (Mike) was allowed to enter the prison later this afternoon with food and drinking water and other needed items for the two Norwegian prisoners. Josh and Tjostolv have now trained, taken a shower and relaxed with a cold beer after three days and two nights of tremendous pressure. Both the British and Norwegian foreign offices have taken contact with relevant authorities in the Congo and with the prison director of the Central Prison in Kisangani.
